Kim Yu-na present on Olympics well: NK sports leader
Figure skating queen Kim Yu-na’s presentation in support of Pyeongchang’s 2018 bid for the Winter Olympics drew praise and acclaim from around the world, and was a huge help in securing the Olympics for the three-time applicant city.
Even North Korea has recognized her skill on the podium; in an interview with South Korean media, North Korea’s IOC President Jang Ung had positive remarks about her performance in Durban.
“I had the chance to see her in Vancouver as well,” Jang said. “She had a nice presentation.”
The North Korean representative, who landed in Japan to participate in the Olympic Council of Asia convention, was interviewed upon disembarking at Tokyo’s Narita International Airport on July 13. In the press meet which lasted for approximately 20 minutes, Jang spoke fluently in English for the majority of his replies.
Q: What are your feelings upon entering Japan?
A: There are no particular feelings. Sports have no boundaries and we are IOC members. The United States, Britain, Palestine and Israel, it doesn’t matter. We don’t believe it’s a privilege to come to Japan, it is a right. We can come to Japan. That is the rule, and our visas had to be granted.
Q: Will your visit give a boost to the North Korean-Japanese relationship, and sporting exchanges in particular?
A: I only have come here to participate in the Olympic Council of Asia convention. There is no other reason.
Q: PyeongChang won the bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics.
A: There were many sympathy votes. That was the first reason. The second reason, the European cities which competed with PyeongChang were looking to host the 2022 Olympics. It is a good thing that the Winter Olympics is being hosted in Asia.
Q: There are opinions that there should be a North-South co-hosting effort.
A: That is what we want. But the political and military relations between the two countries are not good. That must be fixed; if it doesn’t happen, co-hosting will be difficult and it will also affect the Olympics.
Q: What must be fixed?
A: The situation on the peninsula must be normalized. That is critical.
Q: Is there a probability that the situation could be improved before 2018?
A: That is for you to work on (laughter). Economic, political and sporting representatives must work together.
Q: Japan is trying to host the 2020 Summer Olympics.
A: If Japan wants to host the Olympics again, they must have a broad mind.
Q: Did you see Kim Yu-na’s presentation?
A: I had the chance to see her in Vancouver, as well. She had a nice presentation.
Q: Some people are wondering which candidate city the North Korean IOC supported at the convention.
A: That is not a question that should be asked.
