Pyongyang introduces luxury restaurant

It is commonly understood that North Korea is not a high-class country, nor of a middle-income group. Hunger is widespread with rich food often only accessible to the wealthy few. However, the society has decided to turn over a new leaf.

“Restaurant at Hana” opened its doors to North Koreans in the capital city of Pyongyang on July 18. Lined with separate dining rooms decorated with marble stone and classy furniture, LCD flat-screens and beautiful chandeliers, citizens and critics were blown away by the unusual aspects and grand enhancements of the eatery. “I’m not sure why they have a hairdresser’s, sauna, fitness area, and swimming pool, but the overall layout of the place is matchless,” said Yi Seung-gwan, a correspondent for ABC News.

ABC News made a short film of the restaurant, but was denied an interview with the sponsors Joseon Hana Junja (Electronics) Company and Phoenix Commercial Ventures, Ltd. They toured the dining areas, kitchen and façade of the building through the camera, naming the video “Overcoming Hunger through a Luxury Restaurant.”

This is not the first thrilling opening of a foreign/luxurious restaurant. Last year, a burger grill opened in Pyongyang, causing endless lines of hungry people to wait outside their doors. These two major openings were most likely caused by the famine in North Korea, said the World Food Program.

It is located in the European-Korean restaurant sector where the foreign cafés and eateries are known to be.
